For Bankruptcies: Debtor Assistance Project ("DAP"), 3 locations
The DAP provides free 30-minute consultations to debtors. The DAP is staffed by volunteer bankruptcy attorneys. Consultations are by appointment only, and may be scheduled by calling 410-962-3813 or by e-mailing probono@mdb.uscourts.gov.
DAP consultation availability is contingent upon volunteer attorney sign up. Debtors who come to the DAP are typically pro se debtors who are contemplating filing bankruptcy and need legal advice. Some are pro se debtors who have filed and need legal advice on how to proceed after receiving communication regarding their cases. DAP volunteer attorneys are able to review completed bankruptcy schedules and advise debtors accordingly. DAP volunteer attorneys are not permitted to solicit an attorney-client relationship during DAP consultations. Debtors may contact DAP attorneys directly in their offices, after consultations are over, if they would like to retain the attorneys' services. All debtors sign a limited legal advice agreement at the beginning of DAP consultations. The agreement states that the relationship with the DAP volunteer attorney begins and ends with the 30-minute consultation.
DAP volunteer attorneys will not be completing any paperwork or automatically serving as counsel for the debtors. The DAP does not assign counsel, pro bono or otherwise, to any debtors. The DAP has three locations: the Baltimore Federal Courthouse, the Greenbelt Federal Courthouse, and the office of MidShore Pro Bono in Easton, MD.
